Does the show Wowowee exploit the poor people of the Philippines?
I’m from the United States (Filipino American) and I watch Wowowee. I think the show is pretty funny because many of the contestants are funny. However, many of these people are poor and living in poverty. Wowowee seems to get the craziest contestents on their show.
However, I wonder if the show exploits the poor in a negative way. For example, Willy will ask a toothless person to smile in front of the camera and everyone laughs hysterically. Another example is when people get excited to be on some silly show and want to kiss the host.
Yes some of the people are crazy but the entire population is not that way. Anyways how do you feel about the poor on that show?

i don’t watch wowowee –but i know that show.
it irritates me to see how they mess around w/ poor people. you know, they also have pride as a human.
the host pretty knows that the contestants are poor, and will do anything just for a piece of crappy paper.
he’s taking advantage of their weakness, by joking around the contestants below the belt.
you really can’t blame the whole show for doing that. for them, as long as the program is earning millions thanks to their sponsors, they wouldn’t give a damn.
it’s also the contestants’ fault anyway. they go there and allow some cheeky host to shatter their pride in exchange of money. –so they don’t have the right to feel sorry for themselves for being ridiculed.
you know what? generally speaking, humans are such bad people. we just love to laught at other people’s disadvantage.
I like the Wowowee show but same as you sometimes i dont like Willie’s attitude about how he make fun of the poor filipinos. Yep its funny but the show exploit the poor filipinos.
I’ve watched that show few times when I was in the Phillipines. I don’t know if the format of the show before is the same as now but they really do silly things for a cheap laugh but as long as the contestants are willing to do what the host wants then I don’t think there’s an exploitation involved.
We watch Wowowee nearly everyday in Australia and love the show,but Willie does tend to get his kicks out of the people,he does a fantastic job with the people and boosting there financial situation and there is some good talent in these poor people,eveybody has a talent,I think they do look for kids and others to recruit for ABS-CBN as entertainers,they must be on the look out for future stars all the time as they have a big broadcasting to keep up with all over the world.
i kept on watching wowowee because of the female hosts…
they are funny and i look forward to the fashionable clothes they wear…
specially pokwang who always seem to amuse me with her costumes
unlike their direct competition, whose hosts opted to wear jeans, shorts, etc…
things i hate during the show, is when he sings songs from his album and too much on-going advertisements throughout the show… but that is where the fund comes from for all the games and prizes they give away…
do they exploit the poor citizens?, yes, in a way…
but if you really watch the wowowee, they favor the most who is in need
the show makes them laugh, and those who joined the contests, volunteered themselves to be part of the show…
these people are also screened to meet the criteria, since the show is for entertainment and works hard for good ratings, they are chosen for their stories, liveliness, and ability to charm the audience…
i don’t look at it as something negative…
i believe those are just jokes that are to be taken lightly…
its nothing against the person, just something to break the ice…
to make the contestants to loosen up, same as in with a group of friends…
questions to let the contestants share something that is part of them…
It’s all about ratings and making money by taking advantage and humiliating the poorest people. This could possibly lead to a low self esteem and mental depression in a long run.

a little bit….because for me its like they are using money to make people do silly things,like what you have said…also have you heard about the Ultra stampede event? where hundreds of people died because willie promised the poor people a chance to win money,house lot or a car , if they have managed to get a ticket for the raffle show, that they will be hosting..

wowoweee is considered trash by most filipinos, compared to eat bulaga. consider watching eat bulaga instead– the hosts of which are brimming with talents, compared to the idiotic talents of willie revillame. if you still don’t know, willie takes a lot from donations of foreigners and filipinos from other parts of the world who come to the show and was able to buy himself a ferrari last year. an abs-cbn insider claimed willie is not being paid enough nor is earning enough by other means to be able to afford himself a ferrari. how can he, when he is in fact an idiot who doesn’t have an iota of wisdom in his body.
I agree with you. I think the idea of being laughed at is not good. Well, some don’t mind that, especially when Willy would give them money.
I think if those people involved doesn’t feel like they’re being exploited and they just view it as plain fun, we should just let them be. It’s their definition of entertainment. As for me, would never ever dance some crazy moves for the pleasure of some camera mans focusing on my parts.
We watch Wowowee every lunch because it’s like having a delicious dessert. Our lunch isn’t complete without Wowowee. We still feel hungry after eating our lunch when we don’t see Willie or hear his funny jokes.
It has a rival show, Eat Bulaga, airing on the rival station. I dont like Eat Bulaga because it is so old school and well…… boring. Joey De Leon (host) is funny too, but his jokes really hurt. Eat Bulaga has more viewers in the city (Manila area) and less in the provinces while Wowowee has less viewers in the city (Manila area) and more in the provinces. (Wowowee is the clear winner here— the number of the viewers from the provinces is obviously larger than the number of viewers in the city)
I like Wowowee because they make their poor contestants laugh, making the contestants forget their problems. They also share their problems, and sometimes Willie gives some money or advice if the problem is really hard. You know, dancing or acting crazy is…… a way of shaking off their problems. Willie isn’t exploiting the poor here. He is just helping them in anyway he could. He just wants to make everyone happy but I think his jokes aren’t that hurtful. He is just making that kind of joke "the toothless joke" in an attempt to make everyone happy. The women viewers in the show just wants to kiss Willie because they think Willie is gorgeous……….. and they know Willie has no wife.

Wowowee was created to try and topple the decades long competitor "Eat Bulaga" which has thrived out of the natural comic abilities of it’s key and numerous hosts.
Wowowee is the 3rd or 4th program attempted by abs cbn. However, among the problems is relying solely on one host, a previously disciplined (twice suspended by MTRCB) Willy R.
He is funny alright. but he is an accident-waiting-to-happen.
He is a "pathological womanizer" is how i think his recent wife and also suddenly recent ex-wife describes him.
Yes! but in a lot of ways I feel closer to home to watch it and I’m sure a lot of Filipinos abroad and at home can relate.
I THINK MORE IMPORTANTLY, the show exploits women with the sexy dances and it becomes acceptable among children to emulate the suggestive dances. That is something I haaaatteeeeee!

Kaka-asar lang kasi yung mga dinagdag e yung mga wala namang alam..Di kaya si Willie ay naghahangad lang ng ibang matitikman gaya ng bagong salta?? Dito sa KSA di payag mawala si Valerie C. sa walang mabigat na dahilan..Nagwo-work lang sya para sa pamilya nya at sa anak nya.Kaya sa ABS-CBN at WOWOWEE ibalik nyo sya pleasssseeee….Nagbabayad kami ng Subscrition fee dito on time..Gusto lang namin suklian nyo din kami ng maayos na entertainment…thank you!!!
most of the people go there to get money and ummm..i think willie does not respect the girls and more on children are watching and they can see sexy…bad influence to children

so many chances had given to willie and he everytime he gets back to work, he wins the heart of the people by giving them money. wowing the people with his money… nothing but money… he buys his popularity without noticing by others who became blind dahil pinapalabas nya lagi na tumutulong sya sa mga nangangailangan ng tulong… CRAP Willie!!!! BOOOOOOO…. Get out of Wowowee… you’re nothing without the people who believe you and follow and now you’re an AIR BRAIN…
